We built PackWiser to fix this. Created by the team at PickPackShip, PackWiser is the first free estimator that uses actual packaging physics to calculate your costs.

How the Engine Works

When you enter your item details, the PackWiser engine doesn't just calculate basic volume. It runs a multi-step simulation:

• 3D Nesting & BufferingIf you have multiple items, we calculate how they nest together. We then apply "fragility buffers" (adding inches of required clearance) based on how delicate the item is.
• Box Selection & ModificationWe test your items against a standard catalog of boxes. If a standard box leaves too much empty space, the engine checks if cutting the box down (resizing) or combining two boxes (telescoping) is more cost-effective.
• Material & Labor MathWe calculate exact void fill volume (applying compression ratios for materials like peanuts) and surface area for wrapping. We even estimate the labor time required in seconds using Standard Minute Values (SMV).
• Surcharge DetectionFinally, we check the resulting package against current UPS and FedEx rules to warn you if you're about to trigger an $80 Oversize or Additional Handling penalty.
